Identification of microorganisms

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the role of microorganisms in agriculture. The isolation of beneficial microorganisms plays a major role in the development of novel improved soil inoculants, growth promoters, biofertilizers and biocontrol agents.

Our lab identifies bacteria and fungi isolates based on genomic DNA extraction, specific sequence amplification through PCR and subsequent DNA sequencing. Results are analyzed by comparing with microbial reference databases.

16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis is used for bacteria identification, while fungi identification is based on sequence analysis of both the 18S and 26S subunits of the ribosomal RNA gene, as well as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS).
